According to the latest data released by Statistics Canada, the number of new zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) registrations in Canada experienced a slight decline in Q4 2022 compared to the previous quarter. The data showcases the quarterly registration numbers for ZEVs across various provinces and territories in the country.

In Q4 2022, a total of 33,399 ZEVs were registered in Canada, compared to 34,313 in Q3 2022. The provinces with the highest number of registrations included Quebec with 12,153 ZEVs, Ontario with 10,982 ZEVs, and British Columbia with 7,558 ZEVs.

Although these provinces saw a high number of registrations, there was a slight decrease in registrations from the previous quarter.

The other provinces and territories showed relatively smaller numbers of ZEV registrations. For instance, in Q4 2022, Prince Edward Island registered 54 ZEVs, New Brunswick registered 248 ZEVs, Manitoba had 298 ZEVs, and Saskatchewan registered 178 ZEVs. Meanwhile, the territories of Yukon and Northwest Territories had 30 and 6 ZEV registrations, respectively.

Data for Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Alberta was not available in the report. The overall trend indicates a marginal decrease in ZEV registrations in Canada for Q4 2022 compared to the previous quarter, suggesting a potential slowdown in the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.

Canada’s ZEV rebate provides $5,000 CAD towards the purchase of hybrid and electric vehicles. Recently, Tesla introduced a cheaper Model Y RWD to allow the latter and the Long Range AWD now qualify for the federal rebate. The Model Y RWD is said to be coming from Giga Shanghai instead of Tesla’s Fremont factory in California.
